How the spacebar counter works
Pick a duration from 1 to 100 seconds, or No limit to simply count presses (handy for checking a spacebar works), then press Space. The countdown begins with your first press and every separate press after that is counted until time runs out. Your score is presses per second. You don't need to click anything first: as long as this page is open, the spacebar is captured and won't scroll the page.
Holding the key doesn't count. When you hold a key, your computer repeats it automatically many times a second. Some spacebar counters count those repeats, which makes their results meaningless. This one ignores them, so every point is a real tap.
What is a good spacebar speed?
| Presses per second | Rating |
|---|---|
| Under 4 | Warming up |
| 4–6 | Average |
| 6–8 | Fast |
| 8–10 | Very fast |
| 10 and above | Lightning thumbs |
Short tests give higher numbers because you're measuring a burst before your hand tires. The 10-second test is a good balance between speed and stamina; the 60- and 100-second tests are real endurance challenges.
Tips for pressing faster
- Find your best technique. Most people are fastest alternating two fingers or using the side of a thumb. Try a few and compare your personal bests.
- Press the middle of the bar. Long keys are stabilised at the ends, and the centre usually needs the least force and travels most evenly.
- Stay relaxed. Short, light taps beat hammering the key, and tension tires you quickly.
- Mind the hardware. Keyboards with light, short-travel switches are easier to tap quickly. Some keyboards also limit how fast a key can repeat a press.
Why people test their spacebar speed
Fast spacebar tapping helps in games where Space jumps, dodges or activates something repeatedly, and in rhythm and clicker games. It's also a quick, fun competition: finish a run and send your friends a challenge link with your score built in.
If your count seems far higher than your tapping, your spacebar may be registering extra presses. That's called key chatter; check it with the keyboard tester.
Frequently asked questions
Does holding down the spacebar count?
No. Automatic key repeat is ignored, so only separate presses are counted.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes, tap inside the box. Taps count just like spacebar presses, but phone and keyboard scores aren't directly comparable.
Why did my page stop scrolling with Space?
The counter captures the spacebar while this page is open so presses don't scroll the page. Scroll with your mouse, trackpad or the arrow keys.
Is there a click version?
Yes, the CPS test measures mouse clicks per second.
